Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know
About HALT Fire

Detailed answers to the most common questions about our NSF certified, non-toxic fire suppression spray.

What types of fires does HALT work on?+
HALT is effective on Class A fires (wood, paper, cloth, plastics), Class B fires (gasoline, oils, flammable liquids), Class K fires (cooking oils and kitchen grease), and lithium-ion battery fires from devices like laptops, e-bikes, and EVs. Unlike dry chemical extinguishers that are limited to specific fire classes, HALT's aqueous film-forming formula works across multiple fire types because it simultaneously cools the fuel source, cuts off oxygen supply through a surfactant barrier, and prevents reignition with a residual protective film.
How does the foam formula work chemically?+
HALT uses a water-based surfactant blend that works through three simultaneous mechanisms. First, the water content rapidly absorbs heat energy from the fire, dropping the fuel temperature below its ignition point. Second, the surfactant molecules form a thin aqueous film that spreads across the burning surface, sealing it off from atmospheric oxygen. Third, this film persists after the flames are out, preventing the hot material from reigniting on contact with air. The formula contains zero PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), zero fluorine, and zero volatile organic compounds — achieving fire suppression performance without the toxic forever chemicals found in traditional AFFF foams.
Is HALT safe around food and children?+
Yes. HALT has held NSF Registration and USDA certification since 2016, meaning it meets strict food-safety and human-safety standards. It can be used on and around food preparation surfaces without creating a contamination hazard. The formula is non-toxic, non-irritating, and leaves no harmful residue — unlike traditional ABC dry chemical extinguishers that leave monoammonium phosphate powder which is corrosive, difficult to clean, and can trigger respiratory issues in children, the elderly, and pets. HALT cleans up with a damp cloth in seconds.
How does HALT compare to a traditional fire extinguisher?+
Traditional ABC dry chemical extinguishers operate at 100–175 PSI and discharge their full contents in 8–12 seconds, requiring training to aim and sweep correctly. HALT operates at a low, controlled pressure that any person can use with zero training — just point and spray. Traditional extinguishers leave corrosive monoammonium phosphate powder that can cause thousands of dollars in secondary damage and takes hours to clean. HALT's foam wipes clean in under a minute. Most critically, dry chemical extinguishers do not prevent reignition — once the powder settles, hot materials can reignite. HALT's surfactant film remains on the surface and actively prevents reignition. HALT also has a 4-year maintenance-free shelf life versus the annual professional inspections required for traditional extinguishers.
What certifications does HALT hold and what do they mean?+
HALT holds six independent certifications. NSF & USDA — certified food-safe since 2016, meaning the formula can be used around food preparation areas. SwRI (Southwest Research Institute) — independently tested for wetting agent performance at one of the world's leading engineering research organizations. NFPA 18 — compliant with the National Fire Protection Association standard for wetting agents used in fire suppression. UL 711 — tested per Underwriters Laboratories standards for fire extinguisher ratings, the gold standard in product safety. GreenScreen — certified GFFF (Green Fire Fighting Foam) for environmental and human health safety. OMRI — listed by the Organic Materials Research Institute, approved for use in certified organic farming environments per USDA NOP standards.
How long does HALT last on a shelf?+
HALT has a 4-year shelf life and requires zero maintenance or professional inspections during that period. Traditional fire extinguishers require annual inspections by a certified technician, hydrostatic testing every 5–12 years, and can lose pressure over time without visible indication. HALT's sealed aerosol canister maintains consistent pressure and formula integrity for the full 4 years. Simply check the expiration date printed on the can — no gauges, no service appointments, no surprise failures.
Can HALT be used on electrical fires?+
Yes. HALT is effective on energized electrical equipment fires (Class C). The water-based foam is formulated to suppress flames on electrical sources without creating a conductive path that could cause electrocution at household voltages. This makes it suitable for fires involving appliances, power strips, outlets, computer equipment, and EV charging stations. For lithium-ion battery fires specifically, HALT's cooling action is critical — lithium cells undergo thermal runaway where internal temperatures can exceed 600°C, and traditional dry chemical agents cannot cool the cells effectively. HALT's water-based formula directly addresses the thermal energy driving the runaway reaction.
What is PFAS and why is HALT PFAS-free?+
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a class of over 12,000 synthetic chemicals known as "forever chemicals" because they do not break down in the environment. Traditional AFFF (aqueous film-forming foam) fire suppressants contain PFAS to create their film-forming properties. These chemicals have been linked to cancer, liver damage, thyroid disease, and immune system suppression in peer-reviewed research. PFAS from firefighting foam have contaminated groundwater near military bases, airports, and fire training facilities across the United States. HALT achieves its film-forming fire suppression capability using biodegradable, PFAS-free surfactants — delivering equivalent or superior fire suppression performance without introducing persistent environmental contaminants. HALT is also free of fluorine and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
